When winter goes and we get the first hints of spring showing up, it is the perfect time to give your grass the care and attention it needs to remain healthy and green throughout the year. A properly prepared lawn looks green and lush and develops a defence against weeds, pests, and drought. You can ensure strong root development, improved soil condition, and a green outdoor space by tacking down a few key lawn maintenance steps. In the blog, we will walk you through the most important steps to prepare your lawn for spring as a setup for a luxurous and healthy-looking yard throughout the season.

Key Steps to Spring Lawn Maintenance

Overseeding

Overseeding will fill in thinning or patchy lawns with density.  Mix overseeding with a slow-release nitrogen feed to encourage root development. Five weeks later, use a quick-release nitrogen feed to drive robust growth.

Aeration

Compressed soil prevents grass roots from breathing and accessing nutrients, water, and oxygen. Aeration remedies this by allowing better absorption and root development. But early spring is an acceptable time if you failed to aerate your lawn in the fall.

Dethatching

A dead grass and organic material layer can trap water and nutrients from reaching the ground. Early spring is the best time to dethatch cool-season grasses. But warm-season varieties like it in late spring or early summer. A power dethatcher or a dethatching rake can break up the buildup and improve lawn health.

Weed Control

Spring is the time to avoid weeds before they take over your yard. Where crabgrass is a recurring issue, applying a pre-emergent herbicide prevents seeds from germinating, which you can pick up from your local home improvement store. Post-emergent herbicides work best for broad-leaved weeds like dandelion and clover. Pulling perennial weeds by hand at the beginning of the growing season can also be a good control measure. It may require some time, but the results will shine through.

Fertilizing

Timing is everything when it comes to spring fertilizing. Use a balanced lawn fertilizer about three weeks after the grass begins to green up. Fertilizing too early will promote weed growth and lead to runoff. However, waiting until the roots are actively growing will provide optimal nutrient uptake.

Watering

Spring watering is climate-specific. In dry climates, watering is increased gradually as temperatures rise. In more humid climates, natural spring rain usually provides adequate moisture. Avoid over watering during the initial season, as this can lead to shallow root growth. Rather, let the grass green up naturally and water only when signs of dehydration appear.

Mowing

Mow at the proper height for your grass type. Mowing to a low height allows sunlight and encourages weed seed germination and root loss. Grass clippings remaining on the lawn can provide a natural fertilizer and help improve soil texture.

Spring lawn care is essential for building a healthy, green, and resilient yard throughout the year. Proper mowing, watering, and fertilizing also provide a lush, healthy lawn that can withstand seasonal stressors like drought and insects. A little effort in the spring leads to a season filled with thick, vibrant grass that enhances your outdoor space. By following these essential steps, you’ll enjoy a healthier lawn that remains beautiful and thriving well into summer and beyond. If you find the steps tough, you can rely on Lola’s Landscape.
